What are the Major SEO Software Platforms?
It’s 2020 and 22 years past when I began conducting search engine optimization. The wild west of SEO. What an unstructured learning experience it was.
I took to the task of optimizing online casinos, entertainment businesses, ecommerce, and financial services firms. One top ranking for “blackjack” netted my casino client $250,000 for one visitor! Consider the millions for all the rest.
Don’t judge me for being involved in gambling. It was the dawning of the Internet and a rare opportunity to learn the subtleties of SEO.
And SEO continues to be a major generator of leads and sales for SMBs and corporations. Finding the best tools and techniques is time well spent. Back then, we had to check rankings and produce reports manually. It was a major time killer.
Fast forward to 2020 and we’re able to use marketing software and SEO software platforms to help us with a lot of SEO tasks.
Which Platforms Will Help you Learn?
Should you try out these tools and understand the benefits? Yes, it’s important for you to try to understand what your situation is, what SEOs will do for you and what their challenges are.
Afterward, you’ll realize the value of testing content and SEO elements for high rankings and more traffic. Content testing is big right now. You need to understand more precisely what changes are needed with your content, outreach, and funnel optimization.
What do SEO Platforms Offer?
For an seasoned SEO pro, the value of most of these tools isn’t as high. We don’t need the basics. And most of are moving onto AI SEO software platforms which promise more insight, real time personalization, and sales conversion benefits.
SEO software platforms can automate monitoring and reporting and help identify trends and what caused a painful ranking drop. They may help you understand SEO, ranking factors, and what you need to do to give your business more exposure.
I’ll add some tips below to help you get more out of any the tools you decide to “trial.”
SEO Solutions Do More Than Track Rankings
There’s a continuous high demand for old school SEO software tools. Given you just typed in SEO Software platforms into Google or Bing, you’re looking for systems that will help you automate your SEO campaigns.
There’s too much emphasis on relying on tracking and reporting, while not enough on creating real, valuable and reach-building unique content and perfecting it — and supporting your outreach campaigns. The key question with using search engine optimization software is whether it helps you identify, attract and convert your highest qualified customers. Or does it keep you chasing after more low quality traffic?
Software for SEO — Show Me the Proof!
Most SEOs have to show progress in their search engine optimization efforts so analytics tools, competitors analysis, and ranking monitoring are high on their must have tools lists. Amateur SEOs just want to test their SEO elements and learn which generates higher rankings and more traffic.
Yet Google’s and Bing’s indexing systems and ranking methods have become very complex. It puts into question whether these traditional SEO tools offer much value to offer or just keep faint hopes alive.
The truth is, that the use of such software platforms might encourage the desperate use of cheap tactics to create hard to read “doctored” content and scammy backlinks rather than a focus on creating top value for your visitors.
Many of these solutions encourage the SEO version of “trivial pursuit” where you waste your time on things that have no real impact on your rankings. Yes, it’s buyer beware.
Insight with Google Webmaster Console
Google in fact, suggests you focus on highly relevant, unique, valuable, and action-generating content. This is the content that gets shared and builds backlinks. Expert SEOs have a calm certainty that it will work for their SEO campaigns. Many of us don’t fret over rankings in the short term because we know they will show when you’ve earned them.
A lot of what we want in reporting tools is offered by the Google webmaster tools interface. Just create a free account with Google webmasters, place some code on your site, and you’ll get access to their dashboard.
The 5 Major SEO Software Platforms
The top 5 SEO software platforms (MOZ, ahrefs, Spyfu, SEMrush, Majestic) offer the usual list of features and some special tools:
- site audits
- rank tracking
- backlink analysis
- competitor research
- keyword research
- integration with social media for reporting
- social posting and monitoring
- tracking performance of content pieces
- pay per click tracking and reporting (which helps inform your SEO work)
Many of these insights are available via the Google Webmaster console and Google analytics dashboard. Yet, these tools offer tips on what may be wrong and what you can do. Google will not help you with your rankings.
It’s important to understand that these platforms aren’t miracle solutions. Ranking factors and optimization strategies are very unique so general tips don’t focus on your own content and keyword strengths.
Tool + Expertise is a Nice Combination
Only an experienced SEO expert knows what’s happening with your site, market, and how you can build your competitive edge. SEO software platforms still can’t understand the complexities of language and instead focus on keywords. And as we know, Google is moving away from keyword and link based ranking. Of course, these companies could grow to include these features.
I suspect new AI software startups are going to let go of the past, and instead utilize the BERT algorithm update as the launch point for new AI powered solutions.
Question: Is Google’s Algorithm Too Complex to Be Understood and Managed?
Google’s algorithm is very complex but we are optimizing and will continue to optimize. Reporting tools are needed so we can identify opportunities, real demand, and monitor our SEO performances.
Fiddling with your headings, title tags, anchor text, and meta tags doesn’t bring value anymore. It might actually trap you in a spammy frame of mind, where you never come to grips with your real SEO challenges.
With the BERT update, Google’s almost ignoring old cues and looking deeper at the meaning of your content. Content analysis and performance is the gold standard now.
Huge Demand for Better SEO Software Solutions
SEOs offering consulting and SEO services need more powerful search engine optimization, reach building, and content optimization tools. Hopefully new AI based SEO Software will be able to track Google’s emphasis and tell you what to do. You’re better off to head straight for the AI SEO software products and check them out.
All in all, none of them can compete with a talented, knowledgeable, SEO Content Strategist with a knack for creating reach. Even with the insights of the software, it still comes back to the SEO content expert to map content to keyword rankings, creatively engineer reach to acquire backlinks, and make content more engaging.
Avoiding Getting Squeezed By the Google Constrictor
The path from content to keywords to rankings is very complicated requiring some ingenuity and mental gymnastics from your SEO specialist. There are over traditional 200 Google ranking factors and improving on any of them doesn’t guarantee success. Google is reducing exposure and making ranking very tough.
For instance, with Google using “representative pages” and deliberately narrowing your content’s meaning, your traffic might be slowing to a trickle. That might be why you’re here now. Combating this means redesigning your content to be more widely appealing — so Google will show your site in more long tail keyword searches again.
That is a tough challenge. Current search engine optimization software products don’t do enough to help. The software can’t present the visualization of this content, linking and pagerank mapping. I’m sure you’ve seen the click flow reports in analytics. They’re weak because all users are unique. They can’t determine why each unique visitor clicked through to your site and what they did. It’s too complicated.
It’s information overload at best. Can AI sort through that mess? Maybe, but in the meantime you have a lot to accomplish with your SEO platform.
Bottom Line for SEO Software Tools
And even experienced SEO masters will be stressed to create and optimize the most competitive content without it.
Still, it may be a long time before AI SEO software can tell us what our next optimization move should be. At best, it might advise generalized improvements (and might create an over-optimization penalty).
Try some of these major SEO platforms out and then hire an SEO expert to help you lead in a crowded marketplace.
You can also check out the SEO software reviews on PCmag, G2, or Software Advice. They give the standard comparison of features with no real performance evaluation so they’re not really very helpful.
Moz ($179 per month)
MOZ has been around a while now and its top value is its domain authority rating feature. This helps you find authoritative websites where you might be able to get a link from.
Ahrefs ($99 to $999 per month)
Just like Moz, Ahrefs offers a huge database of web links, so you can find good sites to get links from. You can find your top ranking keywords, monitor those rankings and find new keyword opportunities.
SemRush ($99 to $399 per month)
SEMRush offers the standard features with an additional social media reporting tool. That’s smart since social media is very important to your outreach efforts, which support your rankings.
Spyfu ($39 to $299 per month)
Spyfu helps you spy on competitors paid ads, keywords they rank for, and who links to their website. It’s a standard tool for a lot of SEOs.
Majestic ( $49 to $399)
The top questions about the major SEO software platforms is whether they’re worth the big monthly price tag? If you’re just vanity checking your SERPs, then probably not.
Certainly $39 a month is worth it for an agency that needs to report on their clients status with automated reports.
Their achilles’ heel, is a lack of Artificial intelligence components and an inability to help users fashion unique, creative content so they can rank effectively. You can’t just rank like everyone else is doing. Google looks for unique sites and examines in a very specific way about your site’s relevance. You must build your own unique strengths while finding topically authoritative influencers/journalists/bloggers who might give you a backlink from their site.
And that is where we enter into expert SEO strategies using Content AI solutions.
By all means try out the major SEO platforms to learn and grow. If you’re wanting to lead your market with leading edge, ingenious strategies, and add value to all other areas of your marketing mix, then it’s probably time to contact me directly.
