Visiting Beautiful La Jolla California

For any traveler to San Diego and coastal California, La Jolla is the quintessential seaside village.

For upscale tourists, La Jolla possesses 7 miles of pristine Golden State coastline heaven along with a lively village ambience that makes a vacation epic and truly uplifting.

You’ll wake up to a wonderful climate that always seems to be about 72 degrees and dry. You’ll enjoy breakfast at trendy bistros, then enjoy sipping wine at dinner, while later soaking in the golden/silvery sunsets at dusk. The sunsets enjoyed up the hill makes them extra special.

The seascapes, restaurants, upscale shops, walkability, sunshine, palm laden parks and paths, along with luxury hotels make La Jolla a very satisfying travel destination.

Of course, most tourists know this town for its picturesque La Jolla Cove and waterfront park where seals and sea lions gather. They’re right there and you do get close to them.  Yet this amazing village’s culture, feel, and geography, along with its shops and restaurants are a genuine treat you’ll remember fondly, forever, as you tell your stories to family and friends.

A Few Miles from San Diego

The village of La Jolla is situated near the southern end of the long Pacific Coast Highway 101 (which might be one more part of your bucket list, dream vacation). The towns north of La Jolla on the PCH are special too – Del Mar, Solana, Encinitas, Carlsbad by the Sea up to Oceanside provide a beautiful driving experience. You’ll be instantly reminded of the beach movies of the 60s.

You might not be surprised that La Jolla is one of my favorite places, and I would struggle to put Vancouver, Banff, Siesta Key, Whistler, or Aspen ahead of it. And the fact it’s just miles away from the San Diego Zoo, Seaworld, Coronado Island, Seaport Village, and downtown San Diego’s many attractions makes it unbeatable.

Given the economic recovery is about to launch a boom in travel and tourism, many La Jolla hotels and local businesses would be wise to commit to travel marketing. Travelers are looking a destination that’s first class, civilized, safe offering exceptional and unique attractions. La Jolla has all that. From tennis and golf locally, to restaurants with unbeatable menus and panoramic views, there’s just nothing like it.

My real estate SEO clients in La Jolla and I enjoyed visiting the village many times, including sampling the amazing cuisine at restaurants such as The Cottage, George’s at the Cove and other amazing eateries. It does have a Beverly Hills feel to it. You’ll see some Bentleys, Rolls Royce, and Lamborghinis here.

Downtown La Jolla

It may sound strange, but the business and commercial center of La Jolla is excellent. You can stroll around the streets and shops and be in awe of the retail shops here. I really like the feel and ambience of La Jolla downtown.

The Village of La Jolla is home to more than 1000 merchants from modern gyms to restaurants and art galleries to banks. Is La Jolla expensive? Yes, but you don’t need to dine out every night, and there are some affordable hotels such as Inn By the Sea (under $300 per night) if the $500+ per night price at Valencia Hotel is beyond your budget. There are plenty more affordable accommodations in Del Mar, Mission Beach, and San Diego.

In this video, Josh McNair of California Through My Lens a popular Youtube video channel, takes you on a quick day tour of some of the attractions.

Let’s take a quick look at some of attractions that will make your trip to La Jolla special:

La Jolla Cove – watch big waves roll in from the Pacific while seals play on the beach below at La Jolla’s premier waterfront park. Biggest waves I’ve seen.  La Jolla Cove offers an amazing waterfront walkway that makes it a  picturesque and leisurely stroll. Make sure you have your smartphone or digital camera charged because you’ll be taking plenty of photos and video just like I did when I first visited.

The Bluffs at Ellen Browning Scripps Park

Part of the Cove experience is seeing the layered stone bluffs along the shores of Ellen Browning Scripps Park. It’s a special park and you can definitely lay down a picnic blanket and bask in the La Jolla atmosphere.

The variety of scenes from the south end all the way up to the sea caves in the north end is interesting. You can explore underground there too.

La Valencia Hotel – a beautiful Mediterranean themed hotel that overlooks the park. You’ll see the hotel grounds from the restaurants above on Prospect street where you’ll likely be dining as the sun sets in the west. Valencia Hotel offers a genuine luxury stay with its own unique restaurants, a swimming pool, and other amenities. The King Villa Suites are exceptional.

George’s at the Cove Restaurant – George’s not only offers a renowned chef, but also exceptional views of the Pacific Ocean and the La Jolla Park below from the Ocean Terrace. And one level below in California Modern, George’s tells the California story through unique and memorable food experiences using local ingredients. It’s the complete dining experience for those who want to get immersed in the San Diego lifestyle.

The Cottage La Jolla Restaurant – I can attest that having brunch at the Cottage is a cool experience. The Cottage La Jolla has been serving delicious breakfast, brunch, and lunch to the citizens of La Jolla, CA for for more than 25years. The breakfast to lunch to dinner menu is fresh and fun. They offer traditional American and Southern California faire. The Cottage in La Jolla is a street side restaurant with lots of room, but you will need reservations or have to wait.

La Jolla Kellogg Park Beach –  La Jolla Shores Beach and Kellogg Park is a protected area with lots of room for kids to play in the water and grassy knolls to sit for a picnic. At the north end you’ll find the California Oceanography Pier and research facility part of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego.

Mount Soledad Park – Enjoy the views of La Jolla and greater San Diego and Mexico in the distance, atop this 822 foot high hillside park.

La Jolla Natural Park – on the top of La Jolla, is the La Jolla Natural Park, a 42 acre park with plenty of easy to moderate walking trails offering million dollar views. The park is contained within a large residential area where homes reach spectacular prices. At the top is the Nt. Soledad Veterans Memorial. There is a large navy presence in the San Diego region.

The Museum of Contempoary Art  – The La Jolla Museum of Contempoary art is currently closed for a major renovation and expansion project. The upgrade will quadruple current gallery space to show the Museum’s world-renowned, 4,700-piece collection of contemporary art. This will make it a major event in the community and it may be one event to time your visit for.

La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club – The LJ Beach and Tennis Club offers hotel deals and seasonal getaways for visitors to La Jolla. Offering 12 courts and plenty of instructors and clinics, this could be wonderful trip for tennis players.

The La Jolla Country Club – You may have heard of its famous neighbor up in Torrey Pines, but there is another golf course in La Jolla. The physical beauty of this golf course defies words.
